Stair Stringer Calculator

Keep the rise and going exact. Compare the stair geometry before designing the stringer cuts.

Stair elevation

Straight flight · side view

A geometry planning sketch. Stringer support, connections, landings and structural sizing need a separate design.

Compare step layouts

Choose a riser count to see the trade-off between step height and floor space. “Within your limits” refers only to the measurements entered above.

Measurement brief

Keep field notes with the exact layout. Reopen the project when floor finishes or opening measurements change.

Your stair plans

Compare the measured rise and selected layout before opening a project.

Opening a different project keeps your current edited draft in one recovery slot. Consecutive browsing keeps that draft until you edit another project.

Save a named copy

The current project stays available. Copies have their own saved record even when names match.

Geometry for a stair stringer layout

The rise per step and going are the repeated dimensions of the stair. The diagonal shown is a geometric reference between floors; it does not include board ends, support cuts or stock allowance. The elevation is not a cutting template. Tread thickness and bottom-riser adjustment depend on the finished floor and connection details.

Save the measurements with the sketch

Use the measurement brief to record floor finishes, opening measurements and unresolved site details. PDF and print include the selected elevation, exact riser calculation, nosing projection and all entered assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

Can this size a structural stringer?
No. Structural sizing, spacing, connections and remaining wood below cuts require a separate design.
Why keep the exact riser height?
Repeatedly rounding a riser can accumulate error across the flight. Keep the full calculation and confirm the finished layout before marking or cutting.
